Celebration of Steam - Portsmouth Historic Dockyard - Looking forward to 2009

Held the weekend before Portsmouth FC won the FA Cup at Wembley, the third Celebration of Steam in mid-May proved a really good day out. A great success with 6,000 visitors, special guests and brilliant sunshine.

Visitors to the two day event brought perfect weather with them as they were transported to the age of steam thanks to a host of road locomotives, showman’s engines, steam fairground rides, a ride-on railway and miniature engines.

This year, the event, which was popular with both enthusiasts and families, also welcomed the special appearance by children’s classic characters, Ivor the Engine and friends who entertained the crowds with a sing-along with the ‘Grumbley and District Choral Society’.

Visitors also enjoyed:

Amongst full size Steam was a Burrell 3746, S4 Sentinel from the Isle of White, Foden Lorry and pole trailer, A 1901 steam crane "The Great North" lifting the 12ft logs onto the Steam Mill, which turned the logs into tidy planks, Burrel SRL 2979 'The Princess Royal', Foden Wagon, Foden Tanker 13316, Crane Engine 3197, Not to mention a number of miniatures running around - including Woodford's Gallopers and the magnificent Leach & Overington organ.

HMS Warrior 1860 as it came into steam with its engines rooms in operation.

Model Boat displays on the Mast Pond and steam railway & model boats exhibition.

A daily parade which took place from Victory Gate and included all of Ivor the Engine's friends including Idris the dragon, 1919 Garrett Steam Tractor 'Dorothy' and a 1911 Stanley Steam car.

A pint of real ale from Oakleaf Brewery.

A brass band performance in the sunshine by HMS Victory

A huge carousel fairground ride.

For kids there was Punch & Judy show on HMS Warrior 1860's jetty. As well as Kidsrome farm with farm animals, such as ponies, lambs and donkeys.

Craft stalls throughout the site

So now for next year...

Planning is currently in progress for next year’s Celebration of Steam at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard - we are hoping to confirm next year's date in the next couple of weeks but in the mean time for more information and pictures see Celebration of Steam and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

You can even watch a video HERE from 2007's Celebration of Steam

It's getting to that point of the year again where everything seems to start going very slowly in the steam preservation world unless you are lucky enough to own an engine and can hide in a shed working on it throughout the winter months so it's about time we started looking forward to the New Year and the begining of the 2008 Rally Season.
