wrought iron and boilers

I am trying to find out how wrought iron 'behaved' as a boiler material in the early days of traction engines [1860-1870s-1880s ]. There is little helpful material that I have found. I am trying to make a possible link between Aveling's argument for the need of his hornplate invention in 1870 [stress and strains caused by older methods of supporting the crank and second shaft] and the use of wrought iron for the boiler plates. I need to know more about wrought iron and its properties to find out if my suspicions are correct.
Can anyone please help me or provide some direction to search?
